Tips And Tricks For Decorating With Fondant

By Christina Potter

With its elegantly smooth texture, delightful taste variations, and bold appearance, it is no wonder that fondant has become the most popular decorated cake covering for weddings, showers, and other special events. If you find yourself working with this cake decorating marvel, there are a few tips and tricks that can help you make a beautiful cake.

If a person has never worked with fondant before, they will most likely be quite surprised at just how easy it is to work with. Not only does it roll out fairly easy with a bit of pressure, it is very simple to add color to, make small flowers and other decor, and works very well as a modeling clay to create various styles and designs. With just a little practice, a decorator can make a cake just like a pro.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when working with this icing is that you must not allow it to get too dry. Keep the icing wrapped securely and only unwrap what you will be using right away. You can sometimes make the icing more pliable by adding just a tiny amount of water and kneading it into the dough slowly.

The icing should always be kept at room temperature before it is used. Icing that has been kept chilled will be very hard to handle. When it is too warm will stretch too easily and will not hold its shape once it is moved around. If you suspect that the icing is too warm, you should chill it slightly before you continue.

When covering a cake with rolled fondant, always remember not to roll the icing too thin. If it is too thin, the icing will crack around edges and corners of the cake, which can cause a decorating disaster. Even if the cracks do night appear right away, it sometimes will separate after it has been setting for a while.

A buttercreme crumb coat should always be applied to the cake before any fondant is put on. The rolled icing will not adhere to a plain cake the way that other icings will. It will move and shift and can become quite brittle as it sets. Always apply an even coat of buttercreme in the same shade as the rolled icing to create an even appearance.

By following these tips and tricks you should be able to make it through your first experiences with fondant icing without any issues. Once you get the basic techniques down and have a bit of practice, you can create some exquisitely decorated cakes with ease.
