The History And Facts Of St Emilion Wine

By Nichole Cunningham

St Emilion wine are well known French products which include an array of varieties including cabernets, merlots, Bordeauxs, and others. It is the oldest wine district in France and covers over 13,000 acres in the northeast Bordeaux region of the country. It is also known as the Right Bank. The limestone, sandy and gravel soils of the area have helped produce the rich and intense flavors of the deep reds.

These French wines were not classified as other fine wines in the area were in 1855. Some say this was due to envious competitors but the products were then classified in 1955 and have been updated approximately every decade since. The main classifications are the premier grand cru classe' A, the premier grande cru classe' B, and Grand Cru classe'.

The vintages can be poured to accompany many different types of foods including game, lamb chops, grilled meats and ribs. Cheeses also can be eaten with heightened flavors when accompanied by such quality beverages. Purchasing several different types of bottles and inviting friends and acquaintances over for a wine tasting would be the ultimate learning experience and instill an appreciation for these fine French products. A true test would be to have a blind tasting and combine European, South American and California vintages.

In 1855, these varieties were not classified as were other quality wines of the area. In 1955, they were reclassified into three groups. These groupings, premier grand cru classe' A, premier grand cru classe' B and grand cru classe', are now updated every decade. They have achieved a very prominent footing in the classical wine world of Europe.

Enthusiasts and beginners alike can match these beverages to their favorite meals of game, lamb, grilled meats and ribs. They also go very well with many varieties of cheese and cheese dishes, making them a perfect happy hour offering. They are an excellent choice for wine tastings so friends and family can enjoy these quality vintages and learn more about these particular vintages. Blind tastings with a mixture of other European and California varieties would really test an individual's knowledge of the types available.

Merlots and cabernets have been found to be a very healthy addition to any diet. An ingredient, resveratrol, contributes to heart health and longevity. The benefits of drinking one or two glasses every day may help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, reduce breast cancer risks, and protect against heart damage. Studies are still in progress but it is obvious that drinking red varieties has definite health benefits if not consumed in excess.

St. Emilion products make wonderful gifts for anniversaries, weddings, showers and other special occasions. They are delightful beverages for a rehearsal dinner or special family gathering. They will add a unique touch to gift baskets filled with assorted fruits, breads and cheeses. The bottles and labels themselves have an old world quality to them which will add to the visual appeal of your collection.
