Cooked Frosting - How to Make at Home

When baking a cake choosing the right frosting is very important as it is the first thing most people will taste when they go in for that first bite. Many people prefer cooked frosting because it has a very light, fluffy taste that is very silky compared to other frostings that can be a bit heavy if one is not careful.

This frosting is also great for cupcakes and kids love the taste that is sweet but not in an overbearing way that many store bought frostings taste like these days. It is also very easy to use when you want to decorate a cake. Here is an easy recipe for cooked chocolate frosting that is delicious on just about any cake or cupcake you can make.

Ingredients:

1 1/4 c. sugar
4 tbsp. cocoa
4 tbsp. cornstarch
1 1/4 c. boiling water
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

First you will want to get out a medium sauce pan and mix the sugar, the cocoa and the cornstarch together for a minute. Next you will want to add in the water and the salt. You will want to cook on a high heat until it thickens. After this you will want to remove from the heat. Removing from the heat is very important as you do not want it to burn during the process. After you have removed it from the heat add the butter and the vanilla and stir until it is mixed very well. You will then want to let it cool for quite a while until you think it is ready to use to frost your cake.

When you are setting it out to cool you will want to cover the top with some saran wrap or some wax paper so it does not form a skin that many frostings do when they are left out to cool for a longer period of time. Once it has cooled enough it is ready to frost your cake! This chocolate cooked frosting recipe yields enough frosting to cover a 2 layer cake or a larger sheet cake depending upon your own cake recipe and personal taste.
