By Ben Harper

The art of cooking is a very handy skill to have. A home-cooked meal is enjoyable to eat by anyone! However, not all people are up to par on their cooking skills. The following paragraphs contain a number of ideas and insights you can use to raise your kitchen game.

Add cauliflower to your mashes potatoes to make this dish healthier and tastier. Because cauliflower has a pretty bland taste, it blends well with the potatoes and enhances the flavors of the other ingredients. It also mimics the texture and color of the potatoes almost perfectly letting you up your vegetable intake, and drop the calories, all the while giving the same delicious potato experience we all know and love.

Many food items leave their odors on cutting boards, which can linger even with vigorous scrubbing. Put a waterproof mark on the end of the cutting board so you'll know which side to use.

Add oil to the pan's sides when cooking. Adding oil in this way allows the oil to heat before it reaches the food in the center of the pan. This will give more flavor to what you are cooking.

Depending on your recipe, make certain you choose the right potato for the job. There are three different classifications of potatoes, all-purpose, mealy, or waxy. With their crumbly, dry texture, mealy potatoes are great for mashing. Russet potatoes are popular mealy potatoes. All-purpose Yukon gold potatoes are suited for any dish. Potatoes that are considered waxy are good for steaming and boiling because their shape is held. The most popular waxy potatoes are red potatoes or white potatoes.

Apples tend to be a big ingredient during fall and winter, but they tend to spoil quickly if not stored properly. Warm dry air causes apples to rot, so put them in plastic bags with loose ties in a fridge or cool basement. One rotten apple will spoil the whole bunch, so check each one occasionally to see if you should throw any away.

When you are making mashed potatoes for your dinner and are getting ready to mash them, use hot milk, not boiling, to mix into the potatoes. You will get an airier result than would be possible using chilled milk. Try this trick if your mashed potatoes have been heavy or lumpy lately.

Use airtight containers whenever you store unused baking mixes, flour or sugar in your pantry or kitchen. Airtight containers offer the advantages of keeping bugs out of your food products and keeping your food fresh for a longer period of time. You can purchase them at many places, and they are well worth the money.

In order to keep herbs and spices fresh and flavorful, keep them stored in a cool, dark area. If the spices are stored in cabinets by the stove or near other warmer places, this could result in their flavor loss and a money loss for you.

There is more to cooking than piling food on a plate. It is an enjoyable hobby for many people and you get to eat your creations. You may fail here and there, but using this advice, they can happen less often. When you use this advice in your kitchen, you will notice an improvement in your cooking skills.
